Thing 4: “Cool Cat Teacher’s” Spy Article is a MUST READ!

May 29th, 2008 by Barbara Perkins

I shutter to think about what we teachers have considered insurmountable problems in the past…copyright, plaigarism, chalk dust on our backsides! Teacher Vicki Davis has definitely trumped all of those deadly dreads with her article, “Spies Like Us.” As she details for us the James Bond-like, pocket-sized electronics that more and more students don’t leave home without, I am motivated to start a list of possible defenses. [Vicki does reveal her defense, but I won't spoil that for you!]

Once considered a relatively innocent form of communication between individuals, cell phones are fast becoming mobile recording studios with our students at the controls. Vicki says “It will send chills up your spine as they [students] admit their willingness to engage in clandetine behavior” if they feel threatened or justified in doing so. Apparently, recording others without permission –and even worse, editing original recordings– is fast becoming a favorite pastime of our students.

Proactivity, of course, is the best counter to inappropriate behavior, but as Vicki says, schools today have new hours–24×7! So proactivity on the part of teachers and administrators will be a challenge at best. “I believe that the wise teachers and administrators are going to get in front of this issue,” suggests Vicki. However, as she shares, because students are primarily self-taught when it comes to technology, they focus on the HOW rather than the SHOULD.

Much food for thought. This informative article is a MUST READ for administrators and teachers BEFORE classes begin in the fall. Check it out and find out what Vicki does on a daily basis to counter this 21st century threat. …And while you’re at it, check out her blog. Thing 2: Response to “a day in the life of web 2.0”

May 28th, 2008 by Barbara Perkins

WOW! Where should I go from here? …because I truly can go anywhere I am brave enough to go! The ideas from this article that excited me the most were:
1. Weekly teacher blogs that will inform my students, their parents, or my colleagues if they wish to participate. Rather than spending hours at the copier, I can engage my audience in digital conversations …and save some trees at the same time! Who knew? …
2. I’m also excited about the idea of having students take ownership of the study notes for tests. What a great idea! Providing some incentives for the most creative and useful notes is a good idea. Students who take advantage of these notes should be invited to evaluated their usefulness. I would use their evaluations as part of my assessment as well.
3. Finally, how awesome would it be to record and post a class discussion in an audio file for podcasting? I know that my students would be very enthusiastic about that opportunity, and would more than likely come away from that experience with more information and the knowledge of tools that they can continue using in their personal growth.
4. …I’ve only just begun to brainstorm the possibilities!

Thing 1: My Reflections on Lifelong Learning

May 28th, 2008 by Barbara Perkins

Here I go!Habit 5 will be the most significant for me. I tend to get so excited about new learning experiences, especially in technology, that I fail to document and organize properly, relying too much on memory. In order for the experiences in this course to be most meaningful to me later, I must organize my own toolbox as I go along. Afterall, I want to use this information later, and I also want to share it with others. Habit 5 must be a focus for me!  …ccheer1 [You're too kind!]
